A little story about TSA
The year was 2004. I was on my way to the University of Maine in Orono to visit a girl I had dated over the summer, and was in her final semester there. I booked my tickets using Priceline, which ended up saving me money and taking me through Logan airport to get to Bangor, ME. Oddly enough, the flights booked by Priceline were (a) two separate airliners and (b) just 45 minutes apart. I got off...

A brief thought on half-the-distance penalties
Something occurred to me in the car as I was driving with Katie to Green Bay from Milwaukee. What does a football team that is playing defense deep within the offensive end - inside the 20 - really gain from penalties that are enforced half the distance to the goal line? A holding penalty with a team pinned inside of the ten? The defense gets less than 10 yards from the penalty - max 5. And the...

I'll be dividing my talents like King Solomon
In very recent days, I’ve been offered some wonderful opportunities that I can finally share with much rejoicing. (Cue the Keith Olbermann Big Show catch phrase audio.) First, and most immediate, I will be blogging the Ryder Cup for NBC Sports. This was truly a most welcome surprise and I’m really looking forward to giving full-service coverage to the matches in Wales next week....

WatchWatch
My high school, Mt. St. Joseph, is an all boys high school. Their snicker-inducing slogan “Mount Men” got Jay Leno’s attention last night. Shit.

iPad and Buzz ... when names fail
shanebacon: My friends and I have a philosophy about certain things that I have started to call the “Drop it Like It’s Hot Corollary.” Basically, it means that certain people get to a status where they can do anything and you will find it cool/awesome/neat. It started when Snoop Dogg and Pharrell released “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” a song that is basically a collection of random noises and clucks...

The new digital media conglomerate
Some sad news hit the world of print reporting yesterday when the Washington Post announced it would be closing its outpost bureaus in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.  The move was made by the Post (rightly so) because the publishers of the paper in our nation’s capital want to focus on covering DC better than anyone else.  Since the Washington Times is both awful and unprofitable,...

Born to fail, huh?
In the last couple of years, I’ve bought furniture for my house and an engagement ring for my fiancee.  Fortunately for me, both of the stores that I bought the goods from are still around.  But I swear that furniture and jewelry stores just open up to close one day. I also happen to live near the mall in Columbia, and usually walk or run by it each day.  Almost every night - especially on...

Patton Oswalt has a hilarious bit about time traveling to ten years ago to talk to his then self.  He talks to his then self about the downfall of President Clinton and his BJ, and George W. Bush being a total idiot, and then the election of “black guy President.”  The way he delivers it is great. Then Patton: What’s his name?  Thomas Jefferson Washington? Now Patton:  No. ...

How I Will Always Remember 9/11/01
I find it hard to believe that it has been eight years since terrorists used airplanes as people-packed missiles to attack fundamental landmarks of our nation.  The attacks of September 11, 2001, upon the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and the attempted attack on either the Capitol or White House still remain a scary event in my life. The day that it happened was in the first few weeks...

Mark Whicker: A profile in poor perspective
Mark Whicker of the OC Register went into the Sports Columnist Meltdown Hall of Fame yesterday.  What got him inducted was a column that was based around Jaycee Dugard’s 18 years in captivity at the hands of Phillip Garrido.  The man repeated raped Dugard, impregnated her twice as a result, kept her outside in low-grade quarters, and psychologically damaged the woman for the rest of her...

Web 2.0 is making us all into skanks.
We may as well legalize prostitution in this country.  Really, it already is legal.  The exchange of money for sexual favors isn’t kosher, but the practice of whoring yourself out for minor fame is.  And I fear that it’s turning all of us into sluts. Look, I love writing.  I love golf.  I have a passion for expressing myself creatively.  If I had the chance, I would write...

My God, why would you name your baby this?!
I was doing a little research for a blog post about Annika Sorenstam’s baby when I remembered that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution came out a couple of years ago with this database of unusual baby names in Georgia. There are two kids in Georgia - right now - named Fabrege.  Seriously?  Why would you do that to your children?! What is there to gain by naming your kid something that is sure...

Ahoy-hoy.
Welcome to a little foster brain-child of mine.  I’m going to give non-sports blogging a try, just to have a place for all of the other garbage compacted in my brain.  I hope you’ll came back and eat up the slop like the trash compactor from The Flintstones.
