iPad and Buzz … when names fail

shanebacon:

My friends and I have a philosophy about certain things that I have started to call the “Drop it Like It’s Hot Corollary.” Basically, it means that certain people get to a status where they can do anything and you will find it cool/awesome/neat.

It started when Snoop Dogg and Pharrell released “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” a song that is basically a collection of random noises and clucks with no real verse or hook. By all means, the song is terrible, but we decided that those two were probably sitting around one day thinking, “Why don’t we release the shittiest song possible, and see if we can sell a million copies?” I’m sure the two were cracking up as they recorded this arrangement of miscalculated notes, and sure enough, it sold a million.

That is where the names iPad and Buzz fall. The Apple iPad is a device that nobody really needs, but they want it, even after the hideous name attached to it. Same goes for Google Buzz. The Internet conglomerate was trying to simplify how we use tabs and networking, so they came up with something called Buzz, which would have been a cool name if I was in 8th grade or an extra in “Toy Story.” Neither sound like they should, and neither go with what the company is hoping for, but as they could say, “Fuck it, people will use it no matter what.”

I guess this is the same reason so many celebrities wear Ed Hardy.
